- Buffalo's first hospital, founded in 1848 by the Daughters of Charity.
- Sisters of Charity Hospital is a not-for-profit, acute care teaching hospital located at 2157 Main Street in Buffalo, New York. Sisters is a member of Catholic Health of WNY.
- The hospital has 413 licensed acute care beds, 227 staffed hospital beds with the average occupancy of 79%. The St. Catherine Laboure Health Center, adjacent to the hospital, has 80 skilled nursing/subacute beds.
- Our mission is to continue the healing ministry of Jesus. We seek to improve the health of individuals and communities through high quality service that is holistic, compassionate and respectful of human dignity. In the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul, central to this endeavor is the service of persons who are poor and disadvantaged.
- Sisters Hospital Facts:
- Sisters Hospital is a designated Stroke Center by New York State’s Department of Health.
- Over the past decade, Sisters Hospital has played a special role in women’s services. In 1988, Sisters Hospital established Expressly for Women, a service that grew over the years to include a clinical breast care center, comprehensive program for women’s health services, a state-of-the-art labor & delivery unit, and in 2000, an expanded neonatal intensive care unit.
- To support its role as a leading center for women, the hospital completed construction of a new $2.5 million labor and delivery unit in 1997. Today Sisters is one of the leading maternity hospitals in Western New York with 2,900 births annually.
- As a result of increased utilization of the labor and delivery unit, the hospital expanded the special care nursery from 12 to 20 neonatal intensive care nursery beds, a $1.6 million project.
- Sisters Hospital has been designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
- Is designated by the American College of Surgeons as a comprehensive community cancer center. Sisters is the only WNY community hospital and one of only three hospitals in WNY with this certification.
- Is one of the lowest cost teaching hospitals in New York State.
- Offers 24-hour emergency services provided by physicians and nurses trained in critical care medicine with more than 26,000 visits in 2006.
- Continues to be one of the top 40 employers in the Buffalo area with more than 1,800 associates. The hospital is a major economic engine in Buffalo, with a total impact of more than $233 million annually in payroll, supply purchases and capital spending, More than 2,200 jobs are tied either directly or indirectly to the hospital.
- Contributing more than $12 million annually in charity care and community service.
- Sisters of Charity Hospital is a member of Catholic Health (CHS), sponsored by the Daughters of Charity, Diocese of Buffalo, Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, and the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
- An Acute Care Board comprised of members of the CHS Board of Directors and others govern Sisters Hospital. The volunteer board represents a cross section of business, civic and professional interests in the community and is responsible for directing the operation of the hospitals within Catholic Health in accordance with its mission.
- Sisters is certified by the NYS Department of Health, the American Hospital Association, the New York State Healthcare Association, the WNY Healthcare Association, the Catholic Health Association, the WNY Care Network, and is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations.
- Affiliates supporting the hospital include the Marillac Guild, Sisters Hospital Foundation and approximately 160 other hospital volunteers.
- Serves nearly 700,000 out-patient visits at the hospital as well as at freestanding centers in the Buffalo area.
